Southampton VS Arsenal: Match Review

Arsenal were going into this game after a tough loss against league rivals Manchester United. Southampton drew their previous game against Bournemouth and were looking to a get three points today. Arsenal have struggled at St Mary’s in the league recently, but after a relatively positive loss last weekend, we should have had this game in the bag…

The game started off extremely poorly for the Gunners, which is almost exactly what i wrote last weekend. It seems as though our players don’t get warmed up properly and it takes us far too long to wake up.  Some sloppy defending by Mertesacker ( who somehow ended up on the floor) led to Southampton 1st goal, that was poked past Cech by Austin. This goal was a perfect show of our weaknesses and need for a new centre back and a new goalkeeper. After the goal Southampton continued to press Arsenal and we were very lucky not to concede three or more goals before half time. We had a few chances, one of which Lacazette created out of nothing with a nice turn and volley but it went straight into Forster’s hands. Forster made a few good saves in the first half but we never really looked like the better side .

Second Half…

Southampton came out with the same mentality that United had last weekend. Every Southampton player other than Austin was near the Southampton goal and it was obvious that they were going to try and hold out with just the one goal. A poor Merteracker was subbed off and Welbeck came on, which saw us change  into the four at the back formation. We continued to press but didnt really do anything creative. Bellerin had a few chances to create a goal but his passing was off and Alexis Sanchez was losing the ball more than anyone else on the pitch.  Wilshere was subbed on into the midfield and Xhaka came off. Jack added more pace and creativity into the midfield and in my opinion, he showed Wenger why he should be starting ahead of Granit. Giroud came on for Lacazette as it was obvious that Lacazette wasn’t going to beat Van Dijk in the air.

As it closed into the 88th minute, it looked as though we were going to get yet another away loss. A nice cross from Alexis and a great header from Giroud, saved Arsenal from embarrassment as we scored to make it 1-1. The game ended with the scores equal and honestly i think we are lucky to get a point from that game. If we want to keep up with the pack we need to do better and there definitely needs to be some signings in January.
