EUROPA LEAGUE : Köln vs Arsenal – Review & Ratings

Our last away game of the group stage where we hoped to comfortably win & top the group for a favourable draw in knockout stages. It wasn’t the result or performance we wanted but other results anyway helped us reach our target i.e topping the group. We started a second string side which has been usual for our cup games this season. Chambers was back after a lengthy spell out injured and so was Welbeck who both started. It was an experienced team apart from Niles who has been doing great a Lwb.

First half was very poor where our best attacking threat was Coquelin who hit the post. None of the team showed any urgency or desire to win the game. In the second half they got a penalty which was debatable (I thought it was the correct decision) and won the game. Arsenal woke up a little in the last few minutes after Nelson & Nketiah were substituted on. They both went close in the dying minutes but that was all if u ask for our attacking threat. Niles again had a good game & Wilshere had some flashes but that was it. Rest everyone had a shocker apart from defenders who defended well. We can certainly improve this poor performance where we lacked the desire & drive to win the game. These kind of performances will never help our second string players to push for a place in the first team as the quality looks miles apart. I hope this changes & these players perform well in upcoming games.

Ratings :

Ospina – 6.5

Didn’t have much to do but looked assured when coming off his line. Penalty was unstoppable.

Debuchy – 6

Was having a good game defensively until he conceded that penalty. Defended well at times & looked assured but some sloppy play was also there. Substituted later.

Mertesacker – 6.5

He looked a assured presence on the centre of that defence. Passed well & defended with ease.

One of his better games defensively this season as looked solid & commanding.

Chambers – 6

Didn’t do much from an attacking point of few but defended well. Was substituted as he is coming back from an injury and hoping that he performs well now.

Elneny – 5

Had a very bad game where he looked his usual ineffective. All his corners were very poor along with other set piece situations. Passing had no purpose & can do a lot better.

Coquelin – 6

Went close to scoring in the first half & went into some good attacking positions but otherwise wasn’t good. Passing was sloppy & even positioning wasn’t that good.

Niles – 7

Had a good game as he keep threatening from that left flank. Looked sharp and very comfortable in the lwb position. One of the best performers on the day.

Wilshere – 6.5

Showed some flashes of his quality but overall Couldn’t do much. Passing was good but had no support.

Giroud – 5

Had a shocker of a game as he looked completely out of touch. Didn’t trouble the Köln defence at all & even his hold up play was poor. But he was also coming back from injury. Will need to improve a lot to go near our first team.

Welbeck – 6

Played only the first 45 as he was coming back from an injury. Showed his running power but wasn’t sharp as his usual self.

Iwobi – 6

Nelson – 6.5

Nketiah – 6

Substitutes didn’t really had much to do but they looked sharp specially Nelson who went close in dying minutes. They all showed drive & running power but it wasn’t enough to win the game.

There is no man of the match as we lost but Niles, Mertesacker, Holding & Nelson were some of our better players.
