The Premier League season gets underway on Friday night, under the lights of the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal will go head to head against Leicester City to begin their 2017/18 Premier League campaign. As recent history has shown us Arsenal always seem to struggle on the first game of the season, and with Leicester strengthening well in summer, can Arsenal begin their campaign with a much desired win or is it the annual first game curse to haunt them once again?
Arsenal’s season began on Sunday at Wembley. In the Community Shield Arsenal battled it out with bitter rivals Chelsea for the first piece of silverware of the season. The match ended in a 1-1 draw which Arsenal won in a dramatic penalty shootout (4-1). Before the game began Arsenal were written off, missing players such as: Alexis, Özil, Ramsey, Wilshere, Cazorla, Koscielny, Mustafi, Coquelin and Gabriel. Meanwhile, Chelsea fielded 9 of the starting XI that won the league last season; besides fiery striker Diego Costa who is seeking a move away from Chelsea, and the sinuous winger Eden Hazard who was missing through injury. Many considered Arsenal’s side to be the substandard and did not give Arsenal a chance. But, as the game began Arsenal started with a pace and desire that Chelsea could not match and through large portions of the match Arsenal were on top, Chelsea’s goal coming through a shocking display of defending. Nonetheless, the Arsenal team showed stern character to fight back from a goal behind and displayed calm heads to convert all of their penalties. Overall, an excellent start to the season and good platform to kick the team onto Friday.
With the Community Shield victory fresh in their minds Arsenal now prepare the task to take on a strong Leicester side. With acquisitions such as Maguire, Iheanacho and Iborra who only add quality, along with keeping key players such as Mahrez (for now), Leicester have a strong squad and they will be no simple side to beat this season. However, the Arsenal players will have a bounce in their steps, with new arrivals such as Alexandre Lacazette and Sead Kolasinac settling in quickly at the club and exhibiting excellent form in preseason, along with the potential return of Mesut Özil, Aaron Ramsey and Shkodran Mustafi into the side, Arsenal look to be all set to kick off this premier League season with a bang.
Arsenal are in a strong position, they have a complete squad and have the quality to beat any side in the league. Nevertheless, Arsenal are not accustomed to starting fast, having lost their last three of four opening home games. This season it is a must for Arsenal to get underway with a win. Reflecting on how the poor results last season created a toxic atmosphere in the stadium, the club cannot afford to have the same this year. An early defeat at home would only spark riot amongst the fans who will still have the disappointments of last season keen in their minds. Therefore, a strong performance and impressive victory would bring a buzz to the crowd and create a feel good atmosphere at the Emirates. This year Arsenal must get the fans behind the club from the word go. The Community Shield was a good start but here is where the real work begins.
